Those of you who like to promote your business’s loyalty to the Ohio State Buckeyes might be interested in this article from Friday’s Daily Reporter. In the article, Rick Van Brimmer, OSU’s director of trademarks and licensing, talks about the fine line between doing things “in the spirit of community” and infringing on OSU’s protected brand and trademarks. According to Van Brimmer, painting “OSU” on a window is ok — it’s like putting up a flag to show school spirit. But businesses that use OSU’s name or logo in their business name or marketing materials are likely to be contacted by Van Brimmer’s office about trademark infringement. So write “Go Bucks” on your window all you want, but don’t even think about putting the block “O” logo in your business sign.
